Finissage with Depth: Hear the Voices of Women
To celebrate the conclusion of the first exhibition at the new location of the Museum of Women’s Culture Regional – International at Hirschenstraße 16, a matinee invites concentrated artistic experience and a roundtable discussion. The focus is on voices from Afghanistan – people who live and work in the metropolitan region – and the question of how art, exile biographies, and political responsibility interplay.
Textile Voices from Afghanistan: Color, Thread, Memory
The examination of the works begins with embroideries from the GULDUSI program: small, autonomous image fields, densely embroidered, full of ornamental rhythmic lines and bright colors. In the exhibition atmosphere, they unfold a quiet spatial effect; threads condense into topographical patterns that situate motifs between flora, geometry, and everyday iconography. Here, textile art is experienced as a contemporary practice – as condensed aesthetics and as a bearer of biography, memory, and cultural agency.
Porcelain between Grace and Destruction: Bettina Graber's Visual Language
Alongside this are ceramic objects by Bettina Graber. The translucent white of the porcelain – a symbol of fragility – encounters shapes that allude to war equipment. This precise ambivalence creates a tension between beauty and violence. Material, surface, and contour sharpen the aesthetic experience; the sculpture becomes a politically charged form.
Curating as Dialogue: Voices that Need to be Heard
The roundtable for the finissage brings together Sana Arabazada, Fatima Batori, Dr. Habib Ghamin, and Humayoon Rabbani; moderated by Gaby Franger. Starting from an assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, the discussion focuses on concrete areas of action in Germany: protection for refugee women, perspectives for successful coexistence, recognition of their contributions. Thus, curating connects art, discourse, and cultural education into a credible, participatory practice.
Education and Program: Learning in the Museum
The museum complements the exhibition with guided tours, matinees, and workshop formats. Workshops on creative sewing, readings, and discussion series deepen the themes of the exhibits. Regular Sunday tours offer in-depth examinations of the works; the new city center location facilitates access for school classes and groups.
Spatial Experience: Proximity, Light, Resonance
The former retail spaces allow the works to come close to the body. Daylight, short sightlines, and reduced distance create an immediate, contemplative reception – ideal conditions to study textile structures, surfaces, and fine color transitions.
Conclusion: Those who visit the finissage will experience a concentrated encounter of embroidery and sculpture, of exile experience and aesthetic condensation. Art becomes a resonance space for present and responsibility. Come, listen, and carry the voices forward.
