Talavera P+R Parking Lot | Parking & Events
The Talavera P+R parking lot is one of the most well-known and largest parking areas in Würzburg. It is located on the left bank of the Main River in the Zellerau district, directly between the German Unity Bridge and the Peace Bridge. Its proximity to the old town, the Main meadows, and the Cultural Storage makes it particularly attractive for day visitors, commuters, and event attendees. With around 1,000 parking spaces on a flat, open area, there is almost always space available during less busy times. For those who prefer to continue their journey in an eco-friendly manner, they can transfer to tram lines 2 or 4 at the accessible Talavera tram stop. The walk to the city center is short: across the Peace Bridge, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to reach either Juliuspromenade or the Old Main Bridge, depending on the destination. Important to know: As an official festival and fairground, Talavera is partially or fully closed or managed during major events. During these times, the city refers to alternatives such as the Viehmarkt parking lot or the parking garages at Alter Hafen and Congress Centrum. Therefore, those planning their visit should keep an eye on the city's notices regarding closures and signage on-site.
Parking at Talavera: Capacity, Costs, Location, and Walkways
Talavera serves both as a parking lot and a traditional festival ground. As a parking area, it typically offers around 1,000 spaces. It is surrounded by three streets: Mainaustraße, Luitpoldstraße, and Georg-Eydel-Straße. This allows for entry from multiple directions, keeping traffic flow clear even during peak times. Since it is an open area without height restrictions, taller vehicles can generally access it, provided there are no temporary closures or event setups. In regular operation, parking at Talavera is usually free and without fixed time limits. This is confirmed by the visitor communications of municipal events, which regularly mention Talavera as a free parking option. An important exception is large events: During events such as the International Africa Festival on the Talavera Main meadows, the Kiliani Folk Festival, the Mainfranken Fair, or the Würzburg Christmas Circus, the area is fully or partially closed or managed as an event parking lot. For example, a parking fee is charged at Talavera during the Africa Festival; the organizers transparently communicate this. Because setup and teardown phases can take several days before and after the event, restrictions often begin well before the actual start date. Visitors should always pay attention to the city's signage – vehicles parked in violation of regulations will be relocated during closure periods. The Talavera offers short distances to the city center. It is only a few hundred meters across the Peace Bridge to Juliuspromenade; a popular walking path along the Main leads to the Old Main Bridge, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on pace. Alternatively, the Cultural Storage at the Old Harbor is only about a five-minute walk away. Thanks to its central location, Talavera is also suitable for exploring Würzburg on foot – whether it's the Residence, Cathedral, Market Square, or Old Main Bridge: Most attractions can be reached with a short walk or an even shorter tram ride.
Access and Public Transport: Talavera Stop, Tram Lines 2/4, and Bus Alternatives
Talavera is excellently connected to public transport. Directly at the western abutment of the Peace Bridge is the accessible Talavera tram stop. It serves as a park-and-ride station with a short transfer from the parking area to the tram. The stop is served by lines 2 and 4, which connect Zellerau with the city center. Depending on the time of day and the overlap of the lines, the vehicles operate on a Würzburg schedule; on weekdays during the day, they run approximately every 7–8 minutes in the core section, more frequently on Saturdays than on weekdays, and predominantly with lines 4 and 5 on Sundays. For users, it is particularly convenient that the stop has a ticket machine and is designated as accessible. In addition to the tram, there are several bus connections depending on the time of day and traffic conditions, with stops in the vicinity, including Cultural Storage/Red Cross Street, Congress Centrum, or Social Welfare Office. During events or temporary track work, the city often sets up replacement bus services and additional trips; alternative lines are recommended in Zellerau to ensure continued access to Talavera. Since January 1, 2025, the new transport association NVM has been in effect in the region. For passengers, this means: a unified fare system across city and county borders, tickets available in the app, at machines, or in the customer center – and still the WVV as the first point of contact in Würzburg. For a typical trip from the Talavera stop to Juliuspromenade or the main train station, short-distance or city fare tickets are usually sufficient. Those who prefer to visit the city center on foot can take the direct route across the Peace Bridge: From there, it's just a few minutes to the Old Crane, Juliuspromenade, and the shopping streets. If heading towards the Cultural Quarter, the Cultural Storage at the Old Harbor can be reached in about five minutes. Thanks to this location, Talavera is ideal for combined journeys: park the car, take a short tram ride or walk – and you’re right in the middle of it all.
Events and Closure Times: Kiliani, Africa Festival, Fair, and Christmas Circus
Talavera is not just a parking lot; it is primarily Würzburg's central festival and fairground. Several times a year, the area transforms into an event venue with regional appeal. This regularly results in closure and management phases. A look at the typical dates helps with planning. The Kiliani Folk Festival, the largest folk festival in Lower Franconia, traditionally takes place in July. In 2025, for example, it ran from July 4 to 20. Setup began as early as the beginning to mid-June, so parking areas were first restricted and later fully closed. Immediately after the festival, teardown begins, and the parking lot is gradually reopened. In late summer/fall, the Mainfranken Fair uses Talavera as an exhibition ground – in 2025, the date was from September 27 to October 5, with closure starting at the end of August for setup. During the Advent and winter season, the Würzburg Christmas Circus often follows, occupying part of the area and closing parking sections during setup, runtime, and teardown (e.g., from December 11, 2025, to January 6, 2026, with preparatory closures starting December 1, 2025). Also firmly established in the annual calendar is the International Africa Festival. Since 1989, it has showcased international artists on the Talavera Main meadows and is considered the largest festival of African music and culture in Europe. For visitors, this means: during the festival, the nearby area is heavily frequented; parking fees are sometimes charged in the parking areas. The city regularly points out alternatives during such phases, such as the Viehmarkt parking lot below the Peace Bridge or parking garages at the Old Harbor and Congress Centrum. Important for personal planning is that restrictions begin days before the respective event starts and only end after teardown. Official announcements from the city specify the affected areas, closure times, and relocation measures. Those arriving by car during the mentioned periods should pay close attention to the signage, divert early, or switch directly to public transport. Outside of major events, however, Talavera remains the uncomplicated, centrally located parking lot that many locals and visitors appreciate: open, spacious, and with short distances.
Tickets, Rates, and P+R Use: What is Currently Applicable?
There is ongoing discussion in Würzburg about the management of Talavera. In 2018 and 2019, committees dealt with park-and-ride concepts, and at the end of January 2022, there was a city council resolution regarding management as well as proposals for affordable daily rates (e.g., €3 for up to 10 hours) and combination ideas. However, what is practically relevant for parkers is the current situation on-site. As of the end of 2025, Talavera is predominantly used free of charge outside of peak event times and closures. Several municipal event communications explicitly designate Talavera as a free parking option, especially regarding cultural events at the Old Harbor. During large festivals, the area is either closed or temporarily managed. One example: during the International Africa Festival, the organizers charge a fee for parking at Talavera, and the city increases the frequency of certain connections during this time. This means: those using P+R typically purchase regular public transport tickets at the city rate – since January 1, 2025, under the NVM fare system. Tickets are available at machines, in the WVV customer center, or digitally. A consistently available, flat-rate P+R combination solution for parking at Talavera is not an established standard. Additionally, for event visits: tickets are not sold at Talavera but through the respective event organizers; parking is a separate process. Tip for guests: Check the city's traffic and event notices before arrival and factor in the 10–15 minute walk to the old town – during high demand, walking is often quicker and less stressful than searching for a spot close to the center.
Motorhomes, Buses, and Special Vehicles: Parking Spaces and Notes
Due to its open design without height restrictions, Talavera is generally suitable for taller vehicles, as long as there are no temporary closures or setups. For motorhomes, there are designated parking spaces in the immediate vicinity, at the lower area near the Peace Bridge. There are currently about 30 parking spaces available; in recent years, power columns have been added, which are usually billed per kilowatt-hour. Additionally, depending on operational status, fresh water, gray water, and toilet disposal facilities are available. Use is subject to fees; the exact amount may vary and should be checked on-site at the machines or on the notices. Since the parking spaces belong to the same area used for festivals, there may be closures or significant capacity restrictions, especially during fair and folk festival times. Reports and operator notes indicate that access to the motorhome parking spaces may be temporarily closed during these phases; an alternative is to plan outside of peak event times or to use parking spaces in the surrounding area. For tour buses, the city recommends the Viehmarkt parking lot depending on the event. In general, bus and motorhome parking spaces are separately marked; please only use the designated areas and pay attention to event or traffic signage. Those who wish to park a motorhome without overnight stays will usually find sufficiently large areas at Talavera during regular operation. However, a supply infrastructure (electricity, water) exists only in the designated parking areas, not in the general parking area. Thus, Talavera remains usable for different vehicle types – with the caveat that the festival ground character takes precedence once major events occur.
Tips for Your Visit: Short Walk to the Old Town, Seasonal Highlights, and Alternatives
The strength of Talavera lies in its combination of space, location, and accessibility. Those arriving in the morning usually find the most options. During high demand – especially on Advent Saturdays or during concurrently occurring events – it is worthwhile to pay attention to the entire parking area: sometimes only certain sections are closed, while others remain available. The signage indicates red-marked closed zones and green-released parking areas. As a rule of thumb: the closer to the event areas, the more likely there are to be temporary restrictions. There are two recommended routes to the old town. The fastest leads over the Peace Bridge to Juliuspromenade; from there, it’s just a few steps to shopping, dining, and tram connections. The most scenic route follows along the Main to the Old Main Bridge – ideal for taking in the Marienberg Fortress and the vineyards. Plan for 10–15 minutes depending on your destination. Those visiting cultural events at the Old Harbor (e.g., concerts at the outdoor staircase) can reach it on foot from Talavera in about five minutes. For winter events like the Christmas Circus, it is advisable to plan for warm clothing and a bit more time for parking search, as only certain areas are open due to setup and security zones. In all cases, it is advisable to plan for public transport as a fallback: the Talavera stop (lines 2/4) is accessible, tickets are available at machines or in the app, and since 2025, the NVM association ensures easy transitions in the region. Should Talavera be completely unavailable as a parking lot, the nearest alternatives are the Viehmarkt parking lot below the Peace Bridge and the parking garages at Alter Hafen and Congress Centrum on the right bank of the Main. For visitors with motorhomes, the designated parking area under the Peace Bridge is recommended – with electricity, disposal, and close proximity to the city. Thus, Talavera remains a good choice for spontaneous city trips, planned event visits, or P+R use – with the only caveat of keeping an eye on event times.

A really good, adequately sized and free parking lot. You can definitely find a spot here. In 7-10 minutes, walking past the motorhome parking area and along the Main, you reach the old Main Bridge. Cross it, and you're right in the city center. On my next visit to Würzburg, I'll park here again. However, during the times of the folk festival, parking can be tough. It might be wise to check in advance.

Definitely too small before Christmas, especially when a circus is set up 😂😂😂 But you can find parking around the corner by the Main. About a 20-minute walk to the old Main Bridge.

The Park and Ride parking lot in Würzburg. When there isn't an event happening, like the Spring Folk Festival or Kiliani in summer, it's a large free parking area. You can reach the city center on foot in 15 minutes - it takes about the same time by tram. The path along the Main is recommended. Once you reach the old Main Bridge, you can enjoy a drink right there.

A lovely festival, Kiliani. Everything went well in the tent. Service was friendly despite the stress. Restrooms were clean. All the staff were friendly. There are rides for everyone and plenty of food options too.

For years, it's been a must for us once a year: the Würzburg Kiliani. The vendors all have very clean, tidy, and apparently technically flawless booths and attractions. The entire folk festival is always diverse and offers something interesting for everyone. The only downside: some prices are a bit steep, making it less affordable for families. Still, Kiliani is always worth a visit!
