Theater am Neunerplatz | Program & Tickets

The Theater am Neunerplatz is a characterful private theater stage in Würzburg-Zellerau. At Adelgundenweg 2a, visitors do not encounter an interchangeable event space, but a house with its own history, its own profile, and a program that brings together many forms of theater. Drama, children's theater, puppet theater, cabaret, comedy, music, readings, storytelling, improvisation, English-language productions, and open-air events are part of the cultural face of Neunerplatz. This mix makes the stage interesting for different target groups: families find suitable dates just like theater fans, school classes, friend circles, comedy lovers, and people looking for a special evening away from large institutions.

The theater was founded on October 19, 1985, initially under the name Wunderfitz by Thomas Heinemann. The goal was to create a place for children, young people, and art. To this day, the idea of theater by children for children is an important part of the work. At the same time, the house is by no means exclusively aimed at a young audience. Over the years, numerous classics, self-written plays, political and satirical evenings, musical formats, and extraordinary guest performances have emerged. The current performance schedule therefore offers many good reasons to regularly check for new dates and to reserve tickets in time.

Theater am Neunerplatz Program and Würzburg Performance Schedule

Those looking for the Theater am Neunerplatz program will find a continuously updated overview of upcoming events on the official website. The performance schedule is divided into different areas and allows for quick orientation. Categories such as adults, children, comedy, music, open-air, and English Theatre already show how broad the offering is. Instead of serving just a single category, the theater connects different forms of stage life, creating a performance schedule that changes throughout the year.

The current program includes, for example, drama productions, satirical year-in-review shows, improvisation formats, storytelling evenings, and events for families. The play The Country House is announced as a turbulent comedy with love, lies, big secrets, a telegram, and a lot of chaos. Additionally, the farewell concert of Kießing and Kaffka is also on the program as an ImproMusicComedy event. The concept promises the improvised farewell concert of a band that has never existed and will never exist again. Such unusual formats fit the independent profile of the house and distinguish Neunerplatz from a purely classical drama operation.

Another focus is the Story Cellar. This is storytelling art for adults that addresses various themes and moods. Story mixers, mystical trees, rough nights, or tales from 1001 Nights show that Neunerplatz also gives space to oral storytelling tradition. In the Story Cellar, a theater text is not simply read aloud. The storytellers shape the stories directly and make the evening a lively interplay of language, imagination, and stage presence.

For families and school classes, Neunerplatz also offers suitable productions. The house has been closely connected with children's and youth theater since its inception. Puppet plays are particularly performed for elementary school classes during the week. In addition, original children's plays with specially composed music and elaborate stage designs are created. Those wishing to attend the current Theater am Neunerplatz program should always check the respective event page before visiting, as dates, start times, prices, and available seats may vary depending on the production.

Theater am Neunerplatz Tickets, Prices, and Box Office

Tickets for the Theater am Neunerplatz are available through the online pages of the respective events. The website leads directly from the program overview to the individual productions, where dates can be selected and tickets purchased. This way is particularly convenient if you are specifically looking for a particular play, a comedy event, a children's date, or an open-air production. Since the performance schedule includes many different formats, you should not only search by the event title but also by date and category.

Prices may vary depending on the production. For Adams Apples, for example, different prices were indicated for advance sales and box office. The advance sale for one date was 20 euros, while 22 euros were charged at the box office. These details do not automatically apply to all events. For reliable planning, it is therefore important to open the specific event page and check the current price for the desired date. Especially for popular productions or smaller event formats, early reservation may be advisable.

The theater points out various discounts for certain events. Eligible for discounts may be retirees, people with disabilities, and holders of a volunteer card. The corresponding entitlement must be proven when picking up the tickets. For students and trainees, there is a cultural ticket for the mentioned productions. This can reduce the regular admission price at the box office by 7 euros. Again, the details of the specific event should be noted, as not every regulation is necessarily identical for each production.

The Theater am Neunerplatz is a private theater and finances itself according to its own statements through admission fees. It receives support from the city of Würzburg, the district of Lower Franconia, as well as other institutions and private individuals. Additionally, the support association has been involved since the theater's founding in 1985. Those who regularly attend performances and want to support the stage in the long term can find out about membership or donations. For the visit itself, it is important to check the ticket information, start time, admission regulations, and possible discounts online in advance. At sold-out events, the box office cannot guarantee additional seats.

Open-Air Stage in Würzburg: Adams Apples and Open-Air Theater

The search for Theater am Neunerplatz open-air stage often leads to Adams Apples. The play was announced as an open-air theater in Würzburg and combines dark humor with big questions about faith, humanity, hope, and forgiveness. At the center is Adam, a neo-Nazi who is sentenced to community service in a remote parish. There he meets the optimistic pastor Ivan, who believes in the good in people despite all adversities. Adam's initially seemingly simple task of baking an apple pie develops into an absurd yet touching test.

The special thing about the production lies not only in the content but also in the way it is performed outdoors. An open-air performance changes the perception of a theater evening. The audience sits outside, experiences the natural atmosphere of the summer evening, and perceives air, temperature, and surroundings alongside the stage action. At Neunerplatz, this form was explicitly associated with a balmy summer evening, warm air, drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. This creates an experience that resembles a special outing rather than a classic indoor evening.

Adams Apples also shows how versatile the Theater am Neunerplatz can handle materials and venues. The story offers dark humor, quirky situations, and emotional moments. The open-air stage enhances the contrast between the cheerful summer mood and the more serious themes of the plot. The audience can laugh, be surprised, and simultaneously reflect on human behavior, prejudices, and change. This combination of entertainment and resonance is one of the qualities that make free stages particularly interesting.

For attending an open-air event, it is advisable to consider the weather conditions and the notes for the respective production. Dates, admission, availability, and prices may differ from indoor events. Those searching for Adams Apples, open-air theater in Würzburg, or a special summer event should check the official information from Neunerplatz and the respective event entries. The production exemplifies that Neunerplatz is not limited to a single stage space but also thinks of theater as an atmospheric event outdoors.

History of the Theater am Neunerplatz and the Idea of Private Theater

The history of the Theater am Neunerplatz begins in 1985. On October 19, Thomas Heinemann founded the stage initially under the name Wunderfitz. The fundamental idea was to create a place for children, young people, and art. This connection of cultural education, self-production, and immediate theater encounter shapes the house to this day. The approach of theater by children for children, which can be traced back to Erich Kästner, is an important part of the identity. The theater does not only see children as an audience but takes their perspective and needs seriously in the design of the plays.

In the early years, the operation was strongly characterized by personal commitment. The support association was founded with seven people even before the opening. With the first revenues, among other things, a lighting mixing console could be financed. The early years were marked by improvisation, collaborative work, and practical support. Members helped with costumes, premiere parties, cleaning, seating, makeup, wardrobe, and box office staffing. The podium was later built and installed with the support of the city and the support association. This chronicle makes it clear that a private theater consists not only of stage and acting but is supported by many people.

In 1999, the theater management changed to a collective management under Heike Mix, Sven Höhnke, Horst Taupp-Meisner, Maria Meisner, and Wolfgang Salomon. After a renovation, the theater started the new century with the children's play The Ghost of Canterville. Over the decades, numerous well-known materials and original plays have been developed. Among others, Woyzeck, Comedian Harmonists, and Edith Piaf are mentioned, as well as self-written productions like Santa Clauses Attack, Sven the Clever Viking, and The Snow Globe and the Desperate Snowman.

The house also developed its profile through puppet plays, environmental and educational references, and collaborations. From 2015 to 2022, an outdoor venue at the Environmental Station Würzburg was additionally played. Since 2023, the English Cultural Association has also been performing regularly at the theater. Productions like Little Shop of Horrors and The Goat or, who is Sylvia? expanded the offering with English-language or internationally oriented theater experiences. The history of Neunerplatz is thus a story of continuous change without abandoning the original claim: independent art, closeness to the audience, and a versatile program.

Address, Location in Zellerau, and Practical Information

The Theater am Neunerplatz is located at Adelgundenweg 2a in 97082 Würzburg. The address is in the district of Zellerau and is the most important search term for anyone looking for Theater am Neunerplatz Adelgundenweg Würzburg Zellerau, Theater am Neunerplatz Maps, or a direct route planning. For directions, you can enter the full address into a mapping service. The official website also has a map link. Before departure, it is advisable to check the desired start time, admission time, and any notes regarding the event.

A general opening time like that of a museum or a shop is not always relevant for the theater. The operation is oriented towards the performance schedule. The box office, admission, and telephone availability may vary depending on the performance. As contact, the theater provides the phone number 0931 / 415443 and the email address theater@neunerplatz.de. For specific questions about tickets, discounts, reservations, start times, admission, or event details, a direct inquiry to the theater is the most reliable option.

When it comes to parking, visitors should also consider the current conditions in the area. The available event information provides the address of the theater, but no blanket guarantee for a large parking space at the house is given. Therefore, those arriving by car should plan enough time for parking search and pay attention to local signage and applicable parking regulations. Arriving by public transport, bicycle, or on foot can also be sensible depending on the starting point. For an exact connection, the use of a current mapping service is recommended.

The theater is a comparatively personal stage. Especially in smaller houses, a direct closeness between the audience and the action often arises. The seating situation may depend on the respective production and seating arrangement. A classic, uniformly identical seating plan is not generally provided on publicly accessible information pages. If a specific event has a seating category or best seat booking, the corresponding options will appear in the ticket process. For special requirements, such as barrier-free access or seating needs, the theater should be contacted before purchasing tickets.

Diversity, Workshops, and Special Formats at Neunerplatz

The Theater am Neunerplatz is more than a place for individual evening performances. The offering also includes workshops and educational formats. Workshops at Neunerplatz are announced on the website, for which registration via email or phone is possible. Additionally, the theater has a Musical Academy and a Vocal Academy. These areas show that the stage not only presents finished productions but also provides space for personal development, musical education, and practical theater experience.

The thematic diversity ranges from classic drama to contemporary entertainment. Cabaret and comedy create a direct, often political or satirical approach. Music events complement the drama program. Improvisational theater thrives on scenes and situations emerging immediately. Quiz events like the Neunerplatz Quiz combine joint puzzling with a sociable theater evening. The Story Cellar, in turn, focuses on narrated stories and a special concentration on language, voice, and imagination.

Children and young people are also important target groups. The theater performs children's plays and puppet productions, which are particularly visited by elementary school classes during the week. According to the house, the plays are often developed independently. Original music and elaborate stage designs are characteristic of these productions. The educational value arises not only from the themes but also from the immediate experience of experiencing a story together in the theater.

The program is also enriched by guest performances and collaborations. The regular cooperation with the English Cultural Association brings English-language plays to Würzburg. This creates an offering for people who enjoy experiencing theater in English or getting to know international literature and musical materials. The mix of original productions, guest formats, workshops, storytelling art, and open-air theater makes Neunerplatz a versatile cultural address. Those who have only searched for individual keywords like Next to Normal, The Mousetrap, or Rudi should also take a look at the entire performance schedule. Individual productions may have passed, while new formats are being added.

Why a Visit to the Theater am Neunerplatz is Worthwhile

A visit to the Theater am Neunerplatz is especially worthwhile for people seeking cultural variety and a personal atmosphere. The house combines a long history with a program that is not tailored to a single target group. Families can discover children's and puppet theater. Adults find drama, comedy, cabaret, comedy, music, and storytelling evenings. Those who enjoy unusual event formats can choose an improvisation show, a quiz, an English-language production, or an open-air performance.

Particularly interesting is the connection between entertainment and independence. The stage does not exclusively work with large, regionally known productions but develops many pieces and formats itself or cooperates with regional cultural creators. This results in evenings that have a direct connection to Würzburg and the free theater scene. The audience experiences not only a finished product but also supports a cultural institution that has been sustained for decades through admission fees, support associations, donations, and public support.

For visitors who do not yet know the theater, the entry is also uncomplicated. The official program page allows searching by categories and dates. The respective event pages provide information about the content, cast, prices, and ticket purchase. For open-air productions, notes about the special performance location are added. For children's events, target audience and format are described in more detail. Those interested in regular support can get to know the support association or take on a seat sponsorship. The support association informs that new chairs are being financed and sponsors can have their names placed on a plaque.

The Theater am Neunerplatz thus stands for a lively, versatile, and committed stage culture in Würzburg. The address at Adelgundenweg 2a leads to a house that has been setting its own accents since 1985 and is continually changing. Whether you are looking for the current Theater am Neunerplatz performance schedule, tickets for a comedy, an open-air stage, children's theater, a comedy event, or a special storytelling evening: a look at the current program is worthwhile. Always check the specific event before your arrival, as dates, prices, admission times, and availabilities may differ.

Great children play, Zapalot. Fully recommended! My 2 year old loved it. There's also a playground next to the theater where kids can play afterwards and burn some steam 😁

By chance, we became aware of the theater because a play was being performed that we had seen a few times in different productions. With no great expectations, we gave it a chance and were treated to a perfect theater/musical experience. The small theater may not offer the comfort of the big houses, but it shines with very nice service and reasonable prices. Additionally, we got to see a perfect production of the musical Next to Normal. It felt like sitting at the dining table with family, as the theater is so small, and the perfect performance of the actors gave us an evening that will stay in our memories for a long time. We hadn't had the theater on our radar before, but yesterday was definitely not our last visit there.
