BBL form check before the home game
Würzburg Baskets before the home game: This is the team's standing in the BBL
Fitness First Würzburg Baskets enter the final phase of the BBL regular season as sixth in the table. After 31 games, they have 34 points and a record of 17 wins and 14 losses – an interim result that signals stability. At the same time, the recent series of results suggests that Würzburg needs to become more reliable again before the decisive weeks.
Sixth place, but recently without a clear line
The starting position in the table is good: sixth place, 54.8 percent of games won. But the form of recent weeks has been inconsistent. In the last ten league games, Würzburg suffered six defeats – too many to be able to plan the final phase without pressure.
The recent results in detail also show this: The 80:66 home win against the SKYLINERS on April 17 was followed by an 81:90 at home against FC Bayern Munich Basketball (April 23) and a clear 52:83 away at SYNTAINICS MBC (April 26). The clarity of the defeat in Weißenfels is particularly significant, because it was not just a "slip-up," but makes the fluctuations of recent weeks visible.
It is also noticeable that the key players in these games were not consistently the same: In the win against the SKYLINERS, Marcus Carr was Würzburg's top scorer, against Bayern it was Oscar da Silva (FC Bayern) who was the evening's top scorer, and in Weißenfels Khyri Thomas (SYNTAINICS MBC) was the top scorer of the game. For Würzburg, the core sporting task before the next home game is therefore less about "more talent," but rather: to stabilize their own performance over 40 minutes so that the team is less dependent on the course of the game and individual runs.
More stable at home than away
A reliable trend of the season is the home/away distribution of results. Under head coach Sasa Filipovski, there are 10 home wins and 7 away wins. Of the 14 defeats, 9 occurred in away games. In practice, this means: Würzburg has more often created a reliable framework in the tectake ARENA – while away, the error rate and susceptibility to opponent runs have more often had an impact.
The team statistics also paint a picture that looks more "solid" than "dominant" – and thus explains why consistency is so crucial. Würzburg averages 81.2 points per game, opponents 81.0. The difference is minimal, as is the case with assists (16.8 to 16.6). The field goal percentage is slightly above the opponent's comparison value at 45.6 percent (44.7 percent). A small disadvantage is seen in rebounds: 34.6 per game compared to 35.8 for the opponent. In close games, it is precisely such small things – an extra offensive rebound, a second shot, one more possession – that can mark the line between victory and defeat.
The fact that home games have so far been the more stable basis for Würzburg is also underlined by the distribution of their own output: 1271 of the total 2517 points scored were made in the home arena. In an arena with 3140 seats, this can mean that Würzburg more often converts its energy and intensity there into productive phases – a factor that becomes particularly valuable in the final phase of the regular season.
The next home game gains additional importance
The following games are coming up next:
- May 2: Home game against ratiopharm ulm (Broadcast: DYN)
- May 7: Away game at Veolia Towers Hamburg (DYN)
- May 10: Home game against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (DYN)
Precisely because of the recent fluctuations, the Ulm game gains additional significance: Würzburg is still in the upper part of the table, but the last ten games show how quickly a good starting position can be relativized. A home win would not only bring points, but above all confirm what has carried the season so far – greater reliability at home.
The squad is broadly set up with 20 players and an average age of 25 years. The team has 9 guards, 8 forwards, and 3 centers; the coaching staff alongside Filipovski includes Dejan Mihevc and Marcin Wit. In the upcoming games, what will be decisive is less the breadth on paper, but whether Würzburg translates the overall balanced season values into clearer game control – and thus reduces the fluctuations that have too often been decisive recently.
Würzburg remains a team in the upper half of the table. To keep it that way, the team must deliver above all one thing in the season's final sprint: more stability – starting with the home game against Ulm.
