BBL: Würzburg before the next home games

Würzburg Baskets before the next home game: This is the team's standing in the BBL

Fitness First Würzburg Baskets enter the final phase of the regular season of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) 2025/2026 as sixth in the table. After 31 games, they have 34 points, with a record of 17 wins and 14 losses. Ahead of the home game against ratiopharm ulm on May 2, the starting position is good – but it remains fragile, as no longer winning streak has recently been established.

Sixth place – and the pattern of many close games

Würzburg has won 54.8 percent of its league games so far. At the same time, the recent results underline the inconsistency: In the last ten games, there have been six losses.

A look at the team stats explains why Würzburg often ends up in close games. On average, the team scores 81.2 points per game, opponents score 81. The other basic statistics also show little difference: 34.6 rebounds compared to 35.8 opponent rebounds, and in assists Würzburg is just ahead with 16.8 (opponents: 16.6). The field goal percentage (45.6 percent) is slightly above that of the opponents (44.7 percent). Overall, this points less to a clearly dominant profile and more to a season where nuances decide – such as individual defensive stops, rebound phases, or turnovers in tight final minutes.

The last games: a home win, then two setbacks

The most recent three games show the range of performances:

  • On April 17, they achieved an 80:66 home win against the SKYLINERS, with Marcus Carr as the Baskets' top scorer.
  • On April 23, they followed up with an 81:90 at home against FC Bayern Munich Basketball; in this game, Oscar da Silva was Bayern's top scorer.
  • On April 26, they suffered a clear 52:83 away defeat at SYNTAINICS MBC, with Khyri Thomas as MBC's top scorer.

Especially the sequence of a controlled home win, an open game against a top club, and a clear away setback fits the season's statistics: Würzburg is overall on par with many opponents, but has phases where small things tip the balance – and then quickly become more significant.

Home strength as leverage: The tectake ARENA becomes a factor

The home record will be particularly relevant for the final phase. Ten of the 17 wins were achieved at home, with seven away wins. Of the 14 losses, nine were away. The points distribution also supports this: Of a total of 2517 points scored, 1271 were at home.

The home game against ratiopharm ulm will take place on May 2, 2026 in Würzburg and – like the following games – is scheduled for broadcast on DYN. After that, they play away at Veolia Towers Hamburg (May 7) and return to the home tectake ARENA for the game against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (May 10). The Würzburg venue holds 3,140 spectators.

For the table, this means: If Würzburg wants to maintain or improve sixth place, the key will be the ability to reliably bring their own game pace and defensive intensity to the court at home – especially since the statistical differences to the competition are overall small.

Squad and organization: young team, clear structure – and a new name since 2025

The squad consists of 20 players, with an average age of 25.6 years. The composition is broad: nine guards, eight forwards, and three centers. Twelve players have German nationality, plus professionals from the USA, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, or Poland. Head coach Sasa Filipovski works on the sidelines, supported by Dejan Mihevc and Marcin Wit.

In the recent results, Marcus Carr stands out as the top scorer of the home win against the SKYLINERS and thus remains an offensive focal point in the public perception of this squad.

There was also a significant change off the court recently: In 2025, the club announced the renaming to "Fitness First Würzburg Baskets." Such adjustments are regularly closely linked to marketing and partner structure in professional sports – and they underline that the location is driving professionalization not only in sports but also organizationally.

Assessment before ulm: good starting position, but without a safety net

Würzburg has been playing in the BBL since 2015 and has repeatedly made the playoffs in recent years (including semifinal appearances in 2012, 2024, and 2025). The current season fits into this development: Sixth place is a strong position, but not a comfort zone. The recent results and the overall balanced team stats show that Würzburg needs above all two things for a stable final sprint: a consistent home streak – and a form curve that fluctuates less than recently.
