Carl Grossberg in Würzburg: When city, technology, and dream become art
The Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to Carl Grossberg. The exhibition Objective – Magical – Visionary showcases around 50 paintings and about 100 works on paper, making a significant representative of the New Objectivity experienceable in his Franconian chosen home.
Clear lines, empty spaces and the magic of machines
Grossberg's visual world combines precise architectural views with industrial facilities, technical apparatuses, as well as city and village scenes. His clearly constructed compositions appear both objective and mysterious. Between machine rooms, local views, and visionary imagery, a special event atmosphere emerges that invites focused observation and reflection.
An artist with a close connection to Franconia
Carl Grossberg lived in the Lower Franconian Sommerhausen from 1921 to 1940. Many of his works depict Franconian places and Würzburg. A motif from his painting Bridgehead at the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg forms the poster motif of the exhibition. This gives the retrospective an immediate regional perspective and connects art history with familiar cityscapes.
Exhibition experience at the Museum im Kulturspeicher
The presentation is produced in cooperation with the Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal and places Grossberg's work within the art of the Weimar Republic and the New Objectivity. A multimedia tour in the MiK smartphone app, guided tours, and a supporting event program expand the museum visit. Additionally, bookable group tours and selected dates with a sign language interpreter are available for event planning.
Opening hours and admission
On November 10, 2026, the exhibition is open from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The regular admission fee is 5 Euros, reduced 3 Euros. Children and young people up to 18 years visit the exhibition for free. The museum is closed on Mondays and opens until 9:00 PM on the third Thursday of the month.
