Carl Grossberg in Würzburg: Between objective precision and magical dream images
The Museum in the Cultural Storage Würzburg will open a fascinating look at the work of Carl Grossberg on October 30, 2026. The exhibition “Objective – Magical – Visionary” is dedicated to one of the most significant representatives of New Objectivity and combines precise city views, industrial motifs, and surreal seeming imagery.
A retrospective with a Franconian perspective
Carl Grossberg lived from 1921 until his early death in 1940 in the Franconian Sommerhausen. Many of his paintings depict Franconian villages and towns – including Sommerhausen, Eibelstadt, Kitzingen, Marktbreit, and Würzburg. An excerpt from his work “Bridgehead at the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg” from 1928 serves as the poster motif for the exhibition.
Architecture, technology, and the magic of things
Grossberg's clearly constructed, deserted city and village views appear calm and yet mysterious. His engagement with machines and industrial plants began, among other things, with drawings for the Würzburg printing press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer. In doing so, the artist did not idealize modern technology, but rather questioned the relationship between man, machine, and progress.
Visions of the modern world
Particularly impressive are Grossberg's dream images, in which technology and nature merge into surreal visions. Objective precision meets an almost transcendent atmosphere. It is precisely this tension that gives the exhibition remarkable relevance: Grossberg's works reflect the fascination and uncertainty triggered by technological and social upheavals.
A significant exhibition experience at the Museum in the Cultural Storage
The retrospective presents around 50 paintings and about 100 paper works. It is created in cooperation with the Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal and is the first comprehensive solo exhibition of Grossberg's work since 1995. For art enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and anyone interested in the history of modernity, the event offers a concentrated and atmospheric museum experience.
Conclusion: Modern art with surprising relevance to the present
The exhibition invites visitors to view familiar cityscapes, industrial spaces, and technical forms with new eyes. Visitors can expect a art-historically grounded journey between New Objectivity, industrial aesthetics, and surreal image fantasy. Those who want to experience the special connection between regional history and modern art should discover Carl Grossberg's visionary imagery live at the Museum in the Cultural Storage.
